Woman in Media-Newark Hosts Its 12th Annual International Film Festival In Celebration of Women

Free Screenings in Person and Virtually July 29 – Aug. 1, 2021

NEWARK, NJ, July 20, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Woman in Media-Newark (WIM-N) will hold its 12 year retrospective annual International Film Festival from July 29 – Aug. 1, 2021 in recognition of the strength and resilience of women.

This retrospective will screen international, independent films by and about global women's issues, and will include some of the audience favorite films from throughout the previous eleven years. In response to COVID induced precautions, July 29th and 30th will offer in-person screenings at the Cranford Theater, Cranford NJ Akwaaba Gallery, Newark, NJ respectively, while films will also be able to be screened virtually from July 29th to August 1st. All screenings are free and open to the public. Topics for this year's films include child marriage, gender-based violence, elder abuse, LGBTQI, migration, relationships, women's empowerment, women's suffrage and jazz music. "Each year, our festival presents an amazing array of independent films from around the world that focus on issues that affect women, and celebrate their indomitable spirit," said Pamela Morgan, Executive Director and founder of the festival. She continues, "By offering a retrospective festival we are able to revisit some of our audience favorites that still resonate with today's social/political climate."

One of the hallmarks of the festival is the tribute it pays to women who have made a significant contribution to the community. This year's Community Service Award honorees are: Akwaaba Gallery owner Laura Bonas Palmer, J.D.; Women's Activist Jillian Montilla; Artist/historian Nell Painter, Ph.D.; and SONY Senior Vice President Dr. Jennifer Turner. Marcia Wilson Brown, J.D., retiring Vice Chancellor, Rutgers University-Newark will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

• 21 Films being screened virtually including award winners "The Rape of Recy Taylor," and "In the Morning," as well as films on topics including migration, child marriage, elder abuse, relationships, jazz, LGBTQI issues, traditional practices and women's empowerment.
