This Entrepreneur Is Changing The Way The World Sees Africa

Mwai Yeboah, also known as Mwai Chakanika is the renowned founder of the brand ‘Exalt Africa’ and its mother brand ‘Love from Mwai’. Based in the UK, Yeboah is an acclaimed Zambian-born creative director, author, event producer, and powerhouse entrepreneur whose life work centers on advocating for her home continent of Africa.

As the editor-in-chief and founder of Fifty Four Magazine and the founder of Exalt Africa, Mwai, along with her team of talented women creatives, works tirelessly every day to help the world see Africa as more than just a land untamed or a safari destination—but as a setting brimming with rich experiences, award-winning accommodations, and talented artists.

Mwai’s professional journey began over two decades ago when she founded Love From Mwai — a multi-award-winning destination wedding planning house—with the goal of bringing conscious tourism to Africa while helping the Western world see the potential her home continent held for high-end experiential events. But she eventually realized her passion for uplifting Africa couldn’t be contained to weddings—so, in 2021, she founded Exalt Africa, the umbrella brand that now houses the numerous undertakings she’s grown over her 20+ years as a prolific entrepreneur. Under the Exalt Africa brand, you’ll find offerings in travel, consulting, and event production—along with her podcast (The Uprooted Life), home interiors shop (Efie, an international-artisan-focused boutique that donates a portion of all proceeds to Zambian subsistence entrepreneurs), and books (The Chaos Free Bride to Be and Africa Luxe).

Mwai is also the founder of the International Weddings and Events Service Providers Association (IWESPA), Zambia’s first-and-only events association dedicated to elevating ethics and excellence in the industry—and helping Zambia’s event-industry talent gain exposure to an international stage.

Mwai’s list of accolades includes being named one of 2020’s “Most Influential People of African Descent” and a 2022 Women4Africa™ “Women in Business” award recipient. Her desire to help the world esteem Africa in higher regard culminated with her most ambitious project yet: In 2022, she joined forces with some of the most acclaimed creators in the African diaspora—and secured the backing of renowned and notable creatives around the world—to launch ‘Fifty Four’ Magazine. A first-of-its-kind quarterly magazine, Fifty Four exists to preserve and showcase Africa’s culture and lifestyle by highlighting the excellence and exuberance across the continent. Its pages are brimming with jaw-dropping editorials, in-depth interviews with African artists and celebrities, eye-opening cultural insights, and deeply compelling imagery.

"When they say you can't, they show you their limits, not yours." - Mwai Yeboah

A three-time cancer survivor with an unparalleled zest for life, Mwai attributes her numerous successes to her late father—a beloved Zambian educator who saw no impossibilities. Because of him, she most loves creating under the pressure of complicated logistics, in places, she’s told she shouldn’t go, with goals she’s told are unattainable."

Mwai believes her ideal audience lies among people who choose the conscious luxury lifestyle. The people that are passionate about understated luxury and the people that love to discover new destinations are the people I seek, she says.

Mwai deeply believes in the motto of "Ubuntu - I am because you are”. She considers being the Global Ambassador for vow for girls, a brand ambassador for Anantara Africa, a brand ambassador for green safaris, a board member for Africa's tomorrow, and a mentor for when females lead as some of her notable achievements. Through each of these, she says she wants to create an impact that lasts.

Other than her work, she is very fond of her family. When she isn’t traveling the world keynoting at global conferences or producing multifaceted international events, Mwai says she can be found at her home in the UK, curled up on the couch with her son, Ryan, and her husband, Phil.
