Common faults and maintenance of semi-trailer – Air circuit faults

Specific manifestations

1. Decreased braking performance Increased braking distance: When the air circuit of a semi-trailer malfunctions, the pressure in the braking system may be insufficient, resulting in a decrease in braking force and an increase in braking distance.

Slow braking response: Air circuit faults may cause the braking system to respond slowly, and the braking effect cannot be immediately displayed after the driver steps on the brake pedal, increasing driving risks.

2. Abnormal air pressure and leakage Abnormal reading of pressure gauge: When there is a malfunction in the air circuit, the reading of the pressure gauge may be abnormal, such as high or low pressure, which cannot accurately reflect the actual pressure situation of the braking system.

Leakage phenomenon: Leakage at gas path connections, pipelines, or components is one of the common gas path failures. Leakage can cause a decrease in air pressure, affecting the normal operation of the braking system.

3. Instrument display and alarm

Alarm light on: When the air circuit of the semi-trailer malfunctions, the relevant alarm lights (such as the brake system alarm light) may light up to remind the driver to pay attention to the inspection.

Abnormal instrument display: In addition to the warning light, the pressure gauge, brake indicator light, etc. on the instrument panel may also display abnormalities, providing the driver with fault information.

4. Abnormal noise and vibration in the braking systemAbnormal noise phenomenon: When there is a malfunction in the air circuit, the braking system may produce abnormal noise, such as metal friction sound, airflow sound, etc. These abnormal noises may be caused by damaged components, loose connections, and other reasons.Vibration phenomenon: The braking system may generate vibration during operation, and when there is a malfunction in the air circuit, this vibration may intensify, affecting driving comfort and safety.

Conventional modification methodWhen a large semi-trailer experiences an air circuit malfunction, the following steps can be followed for repair:

1. Check whether the sealing of the upper and lower interfaces of the gas cylinder is good, whether the drainage valve is normal, whether the gas cylinder dial or sensor is abnormal, and solve problems such as gas cylinder leakage, insufficient pressure, water accumulation, and icing.

2. Check whether the brake valve is in normal working condition, eliminate jamming and blockage, and solve problems such as brake valve leakage, jamming, and blockage.

3. Check whether the brake chamber diaphragm is worn or cracked, replace the diaphragm or replace the brake chamber as a whole, and solve the problem of poor sealing of the brake chamber.

4. Check the degree of wear on the brake pads. If the wear is severe, replace the brake pads to solve the problem of insufficient braking force or brake failure caused by brake pad wear.

5. Check whether the pipeline is aging, corroded, worn, etc. If so, replace the pipeline to solve the problem of brake failure or insufficient braking force caused by pipeline aging, corrosion, and wear.6. In addition, for gas path connections such as handshake connections and pipeline joints, careful inspection should be carried out to ensure that there is no air leakage. During the maintenance process, it is necessary to pay attention to safety and avoid accidents. If it cannot be resolved by oneself, it is recommended to promptly contact professional maintenance personnel or relevant after-sales service departments for handling.
