New book "Being a Wise Elder" by Stephanie Goldenthal, Ph.D. is released, a powerful view of aging that is grounded in psychological research and enriched by personal experience

“Being a Wise Elder: Living Mindfully and Finding Rewards in the Oldest Years” by Stephanie Goldenthal, Ph.D. has been released worldwide. This brilliant, 171-page book tackles the many challenges of growing older, from ageism and the changing body to considering death and coping with the loss of loved ones. Striking a balance between her experience as an elderly person and diligent research about the physical and psychological effects of old age, Dr. Goldenthal offers insight and wisdom for people reaching their later years.

In accepting aging as a normal stage of life, the author sees “Being a Wise Elder” as the antithesis of an anti-aging book. Instead of looking for ways to slow or reverse the natural process of growing old, Dr. Goldenthal focuses on the psychological and emotional concerns of  this rapidly-growing sector of the population. Topics covered in the book include the evolving self, ageism, coping with loss, and finding meaning in one’s life.

Each chapter addresses a significant concern at this stage of life, presenting important questions for readers to contemplate, anecdotes about real people dealing with similar circumstances, and a psychological framework for better managing the unique difficulties of old age.

Citing research from the fields of biology, sociology, gerontology, psychology, and psychoanalysis, the author presents a work grounded in science and academic rigor. Throughout the book, however, a tone of empathy, kindness, and honesty about her own experiences and those of her contemporaries provides a unique and helpful look at this stage of life which is so often misunderstood.

A comprehensive and engaging examination of the lived experience of the elderly, filled with poignant guidance and affirming realism, this powerful book is a handbook for aging well and finding lasting peace in the process.

Being a Wise Elder (ISBN: 9781962987110) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including Barnes and Noble and Amazon. The paperback retails for $16.99 and the ebook retails for $2.99. Review copies and interviews are available upon request.

From the back cover:

In this book, Dr. Goldenthal describes the many challenges that we may face in the oldest years and how coping with them successfully can enable us to better enjoy this stage of life. We can’t avoid the challenges, but we do have some control over how we deal with them, and coping strategies are suggested. Among the challenges mentioned are ageism, the aging of our bodies, cognitive issues, and the many losses that we might experience. Dr. Goldenthal discusses, from the point of view of an elderly person herself, what people at this stage of life think about. These topics include death and dying and how to find meaning in one’s life. It is proposed that coming to terms with the changes and losses in old age, however difficult they may be, allows us to better appreciate what we value most that remains.
