We request corrections to your “RURAL MEANS RURAL” post on Facebook, which contains significant inaccuracies.

100 years ago, Lake Avalon Groves’ upland acres were platted as 10-acre citrus grove parcels, and the southern and western parcels directly on Lake Avalon were plotted as Lake Front 1-acre parcels. From the 1950s and especially after the citrus crop freezes that destroyed most of our citrus groves in the 1980s and through the early 1990s, most of those 10-acre parcels had been split into smaller parcels.

In 1999, when we began our quest to become a Rural Settlement, of the 353 parcels in our Rural Settlement, 32 parcels were over 10-acres.

Per our 2004 Orange County Ordinance:

2.4.5 - Orange County shall establish the Lake Avalon Rural Settlement. The permitted densities and intensities of land use within the Rural Settlement shall maintain the rural character of Lake Avalon area as designated on the Future Land Use Map.  The predominate designation shall be 1/5 to reflect the existing development pattern. Densities shall range from 1/1, 1/2 to 1/5.  All other residential densities of the Lake Avalon Rural Settlement shall be as provided for in Future Land Use Policy 2.1.10.

From the beginning, our Ordinance stated that the predominate designation shall be 1/5, not 1/10.  The statements concerning 1 unit per 10 acres, is inaccurate and should be corrected.

When we started the process to become a Rural Settlement, our District 1 County Commissioner was Robert Alan Freeman.  He was succeeded by Theresa Jacobs, the District 1 Commissioner when our Rural Settlement Ordinance took affect.  No current member of the County Commission has had anything to do with increasing density in the Lake Avalon Rural Settlement as stated in your post and should be corrected.

Please correct this information on Facebook, and any and all of your other social media platforms and/or posts to other sites.

We appreciate your cooperation.
