Canadians Clean with the Environment in Mind This Holiday Season: More Than 2 in 3 Canadians Likely to Switch to Environmentally Friendly Products

How to Ensure a Sustainable Clean this Holiday Season

As the holidays approach, cleaning is likely top-of-mind for those that plan to host family and friends for this year’s festivities. In fact, a recent Bona/Harris Poll online survey of more than 1,000 adults in Canada found that nearly 1 in 4 Canadian adults (23%) plan to deep clean this holiday season.

With the Canadian government introducing more environmentally friendly regulations as a direct response to consumer demands, the survey, which was commissioned by Bona® North America, a global, sustainably-driven company that supplies products for installing, renovating, maintaining and restoring premium floors throughout the U.S. and Canada, asked about cleaning habits and consumer behaviors as it relates to the environment.

Looking at how Canadians are reducing their environmental impact in the home, nearly 9 in 10 (87%) are doing something already, if not multiple things. Many are donating clothes or furniture rather than putting in the trash (64%) followed by a three-way tie of using cleaning products that are environmentally friendly, adding plants to their home to improve air quality and composting, all at 42% each.

Further diving into cleaning products, more than 2 in 3 adults in Canada say they are very or somewhat likely to switch from traditional cleaning products to environmentally friendly products (68%), including 1 in 4 (25%) who say they are very likely to do so. One in 10 (11%) say they’ve already made the switch or have only ever used such products, a stat trending in the right direction to help prioritize environmentally friendly products within the home. Interestingly, women are nearly twice as likely as men to have already made the switch (14% vs. 8%).

“While the holidays are a time to relax and enjoy our families it’s also important to keep the environment in mind,” said Leah Bradley, Senior Brand Manager, North America, Bona. “It was apparent in our polling that Canadians are prioritizing brands that have a commitment to bettering our planet, with more than 9 in 10 adults (97%) saying that it is at least somewhat important to them that cleaning products in their homes are safe for them and their family.”

Nearly 2 in 3 Canadians agree that the best way to clean floors is with an old-fashioned mop and bucket (65%). Mop and bucket cleaning can ruin flooring by over saturating the floor, while also wasting precious water. Spray mops like the Bona Spray Mop, for example, use 97% less water than a traditional mop and bucket, saving 157MM gallons of water per year*.

As Canadians search for cleaning products that are good for the planet and have safety in mind for their families, it’s important to look at the ingredients and transparency brands offer. Bona’s hardwood and hard-surface floor cleaning formulas have received the U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice certification since 2020, and Bona was named an EPA Safer Choice Partner of the Year in 2021 and 2022. The recently amplified formulations are crafted with plant-derived ingredients, use waterbased and biodegradable solutions, and are free of parabens, formaldehyde, ammonia, phthalates, and phosphates.

For households looking to make changes this holiday season outside of cleaning product swaps, here are a few ideas to boost your environmental impact throughout the holiday celebrations:

  • Use dishes and glassware that can be washed and reused – eliminating additional plastic or non-recyclable plates, silverware, and glasses from the landfill.
  • Purchase an artificial tree that you can reuse year-after-year or plan to recycle your live tree.
  • Conserve energy with LED lights or put lights on a timer to eliminate the amount of time the lights are on throughout the season.
  • Reuse, recycle or make your own wrapping paper. At a minimum, save your bags and wrapping paper this year and store them away to reuse next year.
  • Shop and buy local.

For more than 100 years, Bona has innovated tools and solutions for the most effective clean with people and the planet in mind. In Canada, Bona products can be found at Walmart, Loblaw, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Lowe’s, and other retailers nationwide. Find more cleaning tips at
