KBRA Releases ESG Research – The Return of El Nino: Global Challenges and Implications

KBRA releases research analyzing El Nino, a complex climate phenomenon that adds to rising global temperatures, as well as the potential financial, social, and physical implications it may bring about globally in its ongoing return. The report also explores the impacts of the 2015 El Nino cycle through a case study on the Southern Africa region.

We have witnessed historic weather events this year, including a June-to-August season with the highest average temperatures on record. The frequency of extreme weather and other climate events is only expected to increase, as the world continues to rely on climate-warming fossil fuels and move toward critical climate tipping points. Within the context of a progressively warming world, scientists confirmed the return of El Nino in June. El Nino is one-half of the broader El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate pattern that counters the cooling phase known as La Nina. This weather phenomenon—which typically occurs every two to seven years and last occurred in 2018-19—can last for many months and has historically had multifaceted impacts across the globe. While these warming periods are not uncommon, another El Nino on top of an already warmer world could bring about compounded implications and far-reaching global risks. Targeted mitigation strategies, as well as resiliency plans based on previous El Nino cycles and extreme weather events, can help governments and businesses manage the challenges and minimize potential incurred losses.
