Noted PFAS Industry Expert Shalene Thomas Joins Battelle

Battelle, a world leader in solutions to combat the proliferation of the contaminant known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), has bolstered its staff with the addition of noted PFAS expert Shalene Thomas.

Thomas has joined the organization as the Emerging Contaminants Program Manager and in her role, she will provide thought leadership and drive technology investments as well as service offerings for Battelle’s growing PFAS and other emerging contaminant programs.

Prior to joining Battelle, Thomas filled similar emerging contaminants roles. She has more than 25 years of experience in environmental consulting that includes 15 years of experience providing PFAS strategic management services to government and commercial clients in 32 different states, Canada, Australia, and Europe.

Battelle’s environmental business is anchored in delivering new technology, providing analytical chemistry services, and performing R&D and consulting to solve clients’ technical challenges.

“We are thrilled to have Shalene on our team,” said John Razzolini, Battelle Business Line Director. “She brings an incredible resume and experience that will be a force multiplier to our market leading expertise in PFAS and emerging contaminants.”

Battelle’s Environmental Division Manager, Amy Dindal, said, “We’ve been working in this space for decades and Shalene brings a fresh perspective to help us lean into new ideas and map out our strategy for the future.”

Thomas currently serves as an aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) leader for the ITRC PFAS Team, the Risk Communication leader for the ITRC CEC Team and serves as a trainer for the ITRC Risk Communication Toolkit. She also serves as a Planning Board member for the NFPA AFFF Fire Road Map project and recently joined the ASTM Consumer Products-F15 (23-12) committee evaluating PFAS in products. She has provided PFAS and AFFF training across North America and has presented on the topic of PFAS globally.

“I’m so excited to join an organization like Battelle that not only is a technical leader in PFAS assessment, characterization, remediation, and destruction, but also has a larger mission of using science for societal benefit and returning profits to support STEM education,” Thomas said. “By harnessing the exceptional talent across the environmental, health, and industry markets we serve, I look forward to expanding innovative emerging chemicals services and solutions for our clients.”
