American Water Recognized with Top Score on Disability Equality Index for Fifth Consecutive Year

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., today announced that it has been recognized as a top-scoring company for the fifth consecutive year on the Disability Equality Index® (DEI), the world’s most comprehensive benchmarking tool to measure disability workplace inclusion against competitors.

"American Water is proud to again be recognized by the Disability Equality Index® for our ongoing commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity,” said Lori Sutton, Chief Inclusion Officer, American Water. “We are committed to making a positive impact in the diverse communities we are privileged to serve while continuing to build an equitable and inclusive workplace for our employees.”

This year, 485 corporations participated in the DEI, and American Water’s top score of 100 earned the recognition of “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.” The 2023 DEI measured culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, employment practices (benefits, recruitment, employment, education, retention and advancement, accommodations), community engagement and supplier diversity.

The DEI was launched in 2015 by Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and is acknowledged today as the most robust disability inclusion assessment tool in business.

Additionally, American Water’s “Abled” Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG) advocates to create equity for employees with all types of disabilities (visible and invisible), caregivers and their allies to lead and excel both personally and professionally. Abled’s mission is to promote greater awareness, provide the support that empowers and equips the company’s workforce to achieve excellence and offer resources about the unique needs and talents of individuals with disabilities in the areas of community, culture and careers.

The company has also received several awards and recognition for its commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity (ID&E), including:

  • Named in 2023 to Impact Shares NAACP Minority Empowerment ETF (NACP)
  • Recognized by 50/50 Women on Boards™ (50/50WOB) for its Gender-Balanced Board of Directors
  • Named 2023 Best of the Decade honoree provided by Minority Business News USA (MBN USA) and Women's Enterprise USA (WE USA)
