What happened with the CrowdStrike update on July 19?

On Friday, July 19, CrowdStrike issued a software update that it admitted had a “defect,” causing millions of computers using Microsoft Windows to crash. Users reported constant rebooting and seeing what’s commonly known as the “blue screen of death” on their monitors.

The global IT outage left businesses, customers, and governments across a wide variety of industries – including healthcare, airlines, banking, emergency services, and more – stranded and scrambling to get their systems back online.

CNN called it a “preventable mistake,” and one expert speaking to AP News warned that “ripple effects from this could be felt for days and weeks ahead.” According to one report, businesses face estimated losses of $5.4 billion.
