A Gesture of Love is thrilled to announce partnerships with two Houston organizations, Books for Development and L’alliance Francaise de Houston (French Alliance of Houston). These relationships are aimed at increasing literacy among children in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and have already proven fruitful with more than 15,000 French and English books donated to the cause.
Children in the DRC face numerous obstacles, including illiteracy. There are millions of school-age children in the DRC who have never received a formal education, and statistics show that only 4 in 100 children in the DRC have an opportunity to become literate. A Gesture of Love is a Houston, Texas, based non-profit corporation that goes into the DRC to provide much-needed aid, with a particular emphasis on supporting literacy in children.
“We are very excited to work with Mark Cothman with Books of Development and Dale, Nancy Brown, and Elodie Ricolfi at L’alliance Francaise de Houston,” said Gloria Walker, founder of A Gesture of Love. “We are hoping to continue to grow our projects with more partners and truly serve every child with great education, locally and globally.”
Books for Development and its volunteers address book shortages in developing countries in a mission that has sent books around the world. To date, the organization has delivered 1.5+ million books and established more than 500 libraries. “We enjoy hard working groups of volunteers who get a lot done,” said Cothman. “We also received and donated books bound for the Democratic Republic of Congo - our fourteenth country. We still support them with their vision to provide reading books to children.”
L’alliance Francaise de Houston is a non-profit organization committed to cultivating French language learning and culture in Houston. “We are so happy to help the non-profit organization A Gesture of Love by donating French books from our school library collection for schools in Kinshasa,” said Ricolfi.
