Used Models Gain More Respect in 2024 While New Car Owners Complain About Tech

By: Get News
The Indy Auto Man, Indiana used car dealership, confirms the statistics that more drivers consider the AI features overwhelming in new cars in 2024.

The latest J.D. Power Tech Experience Index study says new car buyers are overwhelmed by new technology integrated into the autos, even though some brands are doing a better job of using it than others. The Indianapolis used auto dealer, Indy Auto Man, confirms that users are becoming frustrated with the volume of innovation manufacturers integrate into their cars.

The IAM internal statistics show that the growing discontent mainly concerns sophisticated infotainment systems. Experts note a general trend of declining consumer characteristics of modern cars, which break down more often.

The J.D. Power study says that technologies like fingerprint scanners, facial recognition, and gesture control aren’t popular because they’re trying to solve problems owners didn’t even know. They are already doing just fine without these features. Gesture control was found to be lacking in functionality by 21 percent of respondents. Active driver assistance systems that require drivers to keep their hands on the wheel also scored at the lowest rate on the usefulness scale, with 7.61 out of 10, while voice commands received 7.98 scores. The biggest annoyance was the front passenger screens, with many owners saying they were unnecessary and awkward.

"I intentionally bought a used Toyota C-HR in a basic configuration because it has only one big shortcoming: instead of climate control, there is a regular air conditioner. But everything else is the same as in higher trims. But a huge plus for me is that there is no start button, but the good old key. And no start-stops. The car is generally a Japanese one I used to know, without all those extra smart features." says Brian Korney, the Indy Auto Man customer.

Owners are lukewarm about the technology and design manufacturers are introducing into new cars. Innovations such as chargers, self-parking modes, in-car apps, and advanced audio features are supposed to improve the owner’s experience, but, in some cases, they only add hassle and cost, like, for example, road-lane assistant, which prevents the driver from switching to another row.“More Indiana buyers come for used cars not because of the price. They complain about the choice. Some want a good configuration with a manual transmission; others are looking for a well-balanced model that has already been discontinued,” - explains Victor Figlin, the IAM General Manager. “The line between high-tech safety and comfort features and excessive infotainment is fragile. In the new era of artificial intelligence, people want their cars to remain a means of transportation, not a robot.”

Those nostalgic about the qualitative cars of the past prefer buying used models from previous generations with natural leather and metal instead of plastic and synthetic fabric. This decision brings double benefits, as buyers get exactly what they want for half the money. However, the newer the vehicle, the more high-tech it is. And this is a good way to get used to the innovations, starting from useful AI-based technologies like smart climate control or blind spot monitoring. The compromise can be achieved with the models, which were in use for a couple of years. These autos have reviews, forum discussions, and car history reports to prove their reliability, while looking like new and containing a reasonable set of time-tested innovations.
