Cotton production releases 814 times more carbon into the atmosphere than that of silk, while polyester production releases 620 times more carbon, making both of these textiles much more environmentally intensive to produce, says the company.

The fabric is produced by silkworms fed on a diet of mulberry leaves, the trees of which are grown organically, sustained primarily by rainwater, and efficient at carbon sequestration. Because mulberry silk is a natural fibre with no synthetic additives, Mayfairsilk’s pillowcases are completely biodegradable and safe to compost once they have reached the end of their lifespan.
The pillowcases are Certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which means that they have been rigorously tested and found to be free of harmful substances such as formaldehyde, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. This, in addition to the hypoallergenic and antibacterial nature of the textile, makes the pillowcases suitable for people with sensitive skin; silk is particularly effective in repelling dust mites and does not accumulate other allergens or pollutants as readily as other fabrics do.
