Castle Kyalami: A look at the Scientology Headquarters in South Africa

This year, Scientologists in South Africa marked their 5th anniversary since opening their much talked about Castle atop Midrand known as Castle Kyalami.

This year, Scientologists in South Africa marked their 5th anniversary since opening their much talked about Castle atop Midrand known as Castle Kyalami. A celebration which has been observed since the dawn of 2019, when more than 4,000 guests from all over Africa and around the globe gathered at the magnificently restored Castle, for a historic Grand Opening of the Church of Scientology Headquarters for Africa. It was a celebration filled with pride and passion, a celebration of another milestone in the history of the Church of Scientology. 5 years later, the building continues to be a hot topic amongst scholars, religious enthusiasts, different faiths and many other South Africans.

Known as Castle Kyalami, the nationally registered heritage site embodies the realization of a dream first expressed in 1966 by L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of the Scientology religion. He sought to bring the messages of Scientology on human rights and social betterment to the land of apartheid—where, at the time, and for three decades to come, freedom was only a dream for tens of millions of Africans.

During the dark days of the brutal apartheid regime, Hubbard advocated for and wrote a new Bill of Rights and constitution for South Africa advocating for “One man, One vote” proposal designed exclusively to emancipate every South African.

In dedication to that vision of equality and freedom, Scientology has opened numerous Churches and Missions across the African continent over the past 50 years. With the establishment of Castle Kyalami, the number of spiritual and humanitarian opportunities has grown exponentially.

The Scientologists dedicated their facilities towards the coordinated pandemic response of covid, using their Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response volunteers. Their dedication and hard work established the Scientology Volunteer Ministers among the heroes who made all the difference for the nation during covid.

According to reports, South Africa’s Scientology Volunteer Ministers contributed millions of volunteer hours on the frontlines throughout the pandemic, working with authorities to curb the spread of the virus. They decontaminated some 70,000 buildings, from hospitals, clinics and senior centers to government offices, police departments, shelters, orphanages and more. They protected the health of millions using the nation’s taxis and buses each day. Scientology Volunteer Ministers sanitized, fire, ambulance, paramedic vehicles and emergency service facilities, hundreds of 100,000 government facilities, and more than 11 billion square feet of spaces, train stations and whole fleets of buses. And some 14,000 taxis every day, for free.

“The work that the Volunteer Ministers have done, it is work that I’ll never forget,” said the executive mayor of Rand City West. “You came at a time when we were very terrified...fighting an enemy we can’t even see. This ministry and this team thought of us. It’s huge, the work you’ve done... Your presence reminds us that somebody cares about us.”

They inspired a grassroots movement and began providing free skills development workshops to empower others in rebuilding South Africa including stakeholders, government officials, religious leaders, police, educators and entrepreneurs, community members and more who were trained at Castle Kyalami.

Today, the number of South Africans who have benefited from this programme reaches 25,000 who are helping in their communities using the skills learned from the Church of Scientology. These courses provide training on the technology developed for the program by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Today, 5 years later, Castle Kyalami continues to grow. Scientology is now offering their social betterment programmes to over 20 African countries.

“Our purpose is a very simple one and that is the improvement of life by empowering individuals with effective skills for a better society. We open our doors and avail our resources to the betterment of our continent and work with anyone who has the same vision, “said Spokesperson for the Church of Scientology, Sandile Hlayisi.

While Kyalami Castle acts as the African headquarters for Scientology, the church is constantly acquiring a number of properties across Africa for their further expansion.
