Impact Rankings 2023 Released, Creating a Sound University Campus with Sustainable Concepts

Times Higher Education recently released the fifth edition of the Impact Rankings. There are three universities in Taiwan ranked within the top 100, namely National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University, and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. The best-ranked National Cheng Kung University is tied with Newcastle University in the UK at 24th.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (Merxwire) – Times Higher Education (THE) recently released the fifth edition of the Impact Rankings. A total of 47 universities in Taiwan entered the rankings, and three universities ranked within the top 100, namely National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University, and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. Among them, National Cheng Kung University in Tainan ranks the best, tied for 24th with Newcastle University in the UK.

Impact Rankings is the only ranking in the world that evaluates global university institutes based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Including no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work economic growth, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, etc. 17 goals.

The scoring indicators emphasize comprehensiveness and balanced development, including research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching 4 areas. The fifth edition of Impact Rankings released this year covers 1,591 universities in 112 countries and regions, and the number continues to increase. As more and more universities join the rankings and demonstrate their substantial commitment to the SDGs, the concept of sustainable development has sprouted and grown during the campus period. To enable students to cultivate a sound global citizen literacy and practice in all walks of life in the future.

In terms of the overall global ranking, the United Kingdom has the most universities in the top 100 rankings, with 26 in total. The first place Western Sydney University in Australia, ranking first for the second year in a row. Ranked second to ninth are the University of Manchester in the UK, Queen’s University in Canada, Universiti Sains Malaysia, University of Tasmania in Australia, and Arizona State University, Tempe. University of Alberta in Canada and RMIT University in Australia tied for seventh place. Aalborg University in Denmark, University of Victoria in Canada, and Western University tied for ninth place.

In terms of universities in Taiwan, the best performer is National Cheng Kung University, whose ranking has improved from 33rd last year to 24th. National Taiwan University ranked No. 2 in Taiwan and No. 67 in the world, tied with the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, down from No. 37 last year. National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University ranked third in Taiwan, tied with The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 83rd place in the world.

Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer of THE, said that National Cheng Kung University from Taiwan can be ranked 24th, and 47 schools can be ranked in Impact Rankings. In the individual 17 SDGs, these universities in Taiwan are listed in the world rankings top 100 of 16 goals. Represents the importance attached by universities in Taiwan to SDGs.

With the increase in the number of schools participating in the evaluation each year, it can be seen that policies have been formulated more clearly and in a planned way on higher education campuses, and efforts are being made to achieve the goals of sustainable campuses and the earth.
