Coronado Dentist Discusses Dental Implants Versus Dentures

Coronado, California, United States - 10-13-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

Coronado dentist Jason Keckley, DMD discusses the differences between dental implants and dentures for full and partial arch replacement.

Coronado, CA — Both dental implant restorations and dentures can provide patients with an effective solution to tooth loss. However, choosing the correct option can prove difficult, with factors ranging from cost to aesthetics impacting the final decision. Coronado and Imperial Beach-based dentist, Jason Keckley, DMD, regularly performs both procedures, and he asserts that the best choice ultimately depends on the individual needs of each patient. During a consultation, he takes the time to get to know his patients and learn about their goals for the procedure. After assessing their oral health, he can provide recommendations regarding the best tooth replacement option for their unique case. In his opinion, one of the best ways to help patients decide on the most appropriate solution is to outline the specific properties of each option.

Dental implants are a versatile solution to tooth loss, capable of replacing single teeth, multiple consecutive teeth, or even full arches of teeth. They work by replacing essentially the entire natural tooth structure: a titanium post is implanted into the gum tissue and jawbone to simulate the tooth root. Once the post has fully healed and integrated with the patient’s jaw and gum tissues, it is topped with an abutment and restoration—either a crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture. Dr. Keckley notes that many patients enjoy the natural look and feel of dental implants, which function essentially just like natural teeth. Furthermore, he remarks that dental implants can help support long-term health outcomes by stimulating the jaw and gum tissues and preventing bone resorption. However, in order to be eligible for dental implants, patients must have good overall oral health and sufficient jawbone density to support the implant posts. The upfront costs associated with implants are also often higher than other tooth replacement options, and they are less likely to be eligible for insurance coverage.

Full and partial dentures are the traditional solution for replacing multiple consecutive teeth or full arches of teeth, and they can provide an effective and aesthetically-pleasing method of smile restoration for many patients. Dentures are designed to rest comfortably on top of the gums, with the denture prosthetic being custom-crafted based on impressions of the patient’s mouth. The denture appliance is made up of a base—which is designed to mimic the appearance of gum tissue—and a set of replacement teeth. Dr. Keckley meticulously selects the size, shape, and color of the teeth as well as the shade of gum tissue used during the fabrication process in order to create a prosthetic that looks and feels as natural as possible. Dentures are often considered the most cost-effective solution when it comes to replacing multiple teeth, and Dr. Keckley has used them to help countless patients restore their smiles.

Ultimately, the optimal method of tooth replacement varies on a case-by-case basis, says Dr. Keckley. He encourages patients seeking full or partial arch replacement to schedule a consultation with a dentist who offers both dental implants and dentures. In his opinion, a qualified professional who has experience performing both procedures is ideally equipped to provide a balanced perspective that accounts for a broad range of important factors.
