North Carolina Medical Cannabis Bill Stalled - Contact the NC House of Representatives

North Carolina, United States - 06-22-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

Good afternoon, my name is Prerak (PJ) Patel and I am the President of the Americans for Safe Access (ASA) chapter in Raleigh, NC. With over 100,000 active members, ASA is the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists, and citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research.

As President of the Raleigh, NC Chapter of ASA, I am writing to call for action regarding Senate Bill (SB) 711 within the State of North Carolina’s 2022 short legislative session. As written, SB711 creates a framework for legal medical cannabis in North Carolina and provides patients with qualifying conditions access to much-needed medical cannabis. SB711 is described in greater detail within this provided link. As the third most populous U.S. State without a medical cannabis program, North Carolina’s medical patients deserve the option to have meaningful access to safe and legal access to medical cannabis.

On 8 June 2022, SB711 was approved by the North Carolina Senate by a 36-7 margin. However, as of 21 June 2022, SB711 is not currently scheduled to be voted upon in the State of North Carolina’s 2022 short legislative session; which concludes on 30 June 2022. The Speaker of the House, Rep. Tim Moore, has stated the Bill will not be put to a vote in 2022, despite bipartisan support and 72% of North Carolina residents in support of the legalization of medical cannabis. If SB711 is not put to a vote this session, North Carolina’s medical patients, including patients with cancer, Parkinson’s, ALS, and AIDS, among other conditions, will remain without meaningful legal access to medical cannabis indefinitely.

While North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed into law Senate Bill 448 on 14 June 2022, which allows North Carolina patients to access THC drugs that are Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved; Senate Bill 448 does not provide meaningful access to cannabis for medical patients. To date, the FDA has only approved one cannabis-derived and three cannabis-related drug products.

Accordingly, I strongly encourage you to contact your local North Carolina House of Representatives member as soon as possible by phone and email to reiterate your support of SB711 and voice the need for SB711 to be voted on within the House of Representatives before the State of North Carolina’s 2022 short legislative session ends on 30 June 2022. You can find your local House of Representatives member via this link. Furthermore, please contact Speaker of the House Tim Moore by phone and email to underline the importance of SB711 to North Carolina medical patients and sign the linked change.org petition to encourage the House to bring SB711 to a vote during the short legislative session.

The time for action is now. Contact your North Carolina House of Representatives member today before the State of North Carolina’s 2022 short legislative session ends on 30 June 2022. For more information, contact info@sanativenc.com.
