Buying The Right Used Car Can Be Financially Savvy, Says CarBuzz

What to look out for when buying a pre-owned vehicle

(PRUnderground) June 14th, 2022

Shopping in the used car market is great for those who are on a tight budget. But how do you know which models are the right ones to choose? CarBuzz provides guidance on which models to opt for in the pickup truck, performance car, SUV, and family vehicle categories.

Second-generation Toyota Tacoma

The 2nd-gen Tacoma covered a whole decade in the pickup truck segment from 2005 to 2015, with two facelifts during that time. The Tacoma is reliable, tough, and powered by durable engines and transmission. Still, the Tacoma doesn’t offer as much capability in terms of towing and hauling as some rivals do. CarBuzz suggests avoiding early 2005-2008 models and those with the 2.7-liter engine and four-speed transmission. Instead, opt for a model from 2014 that comes with the most safety kit, the benefits of the facelift, and a touchscreen for the infotainment system.

Fifth-generation Ford Mustang

The 5th-gen Ford Mustang S-197 was the last to use a live rear axle and, when powered by the 4.6-liter V8, remains one of the most affordable high-performance pony cars in the United States. It underwent various improvements in this generation, and while you should avoid V6-powered Mustangs and those with the flawed six-speed manual transmission, the 2010 model year with the five-speed stick shift is an excellent buy.

Third-generation Jeep Wrangler

Fans of off-roading love the third-gen JK Jeep Wrangler that was new from 2007 to 2017. It features a removable roof and doors, an available manual transmission, and a generally reliable and strong V6 engine. The powertrain was known for being thirsty, however, and most used examples will be modified to some extent. But perhaps the most important thing to remember is that the Wrangler is by no means a comfortable family hauler. It’s designed to take on the road less traveled, so serious adventurers should be looking at Rubicon models from around 2015, when most of the Jeep’s mechanical issues had been ironed out.

Third-generation Toyota Prius

Those in the market for an efficient family runner would’ve certainly considered the Prius. The second-generation car was derided for its unattractive looks, so the gen-3 Prius was intended to be a little more appealing. While the newer 2010- 2015 models aren’t beautiful either, there are numerous improvements to take note of over the course of its lifespan, including a 2012 facelift.

The 3rd-gen Prius provides superb fuel economy, a spacious cabin, and some tech features that were ahead of its time some years ago. Prius 3, 4, and 5 models from 2014 or 2015 are the ones to opt for if you’re shopping for a used car.
