3rd Annual Global First Nations Carbon Summit Tackles Key Issues in Carbon Market

Carbon RX

Regina, SK – September 27, 2024TheNewswire – The 3rd Annual Global First Nations Carbon Summit, hosted by Carbon RX Inc. (“Carbon RX”), brought together First Nation leaders, carbon market experts, government officials, and industry stakeholders in Treaty 4 territory timed in conjunction with Climate Week. The summit facilitated important discussions on nature-based carbon management and its economic opportunities, particularly for First Nations communities, while emphasizing the necessity of environmental and regulatory accountability.

The event had many notable speakers on the topic of carbon markets with some of the key messages being:

  1. Canada’s Bill C-59:

The bill focuses on environmental greenwashing by corporations operating in Canada or those planning to do business in Canada. Organizations were urged to review all environmental claims and ensure they meet stringent substantiation standards. Claims that cannot be validated should be revised or withdrawn to comply with the law, mitigating the risks of penalties and reputational damage.

  1. Securing Carbon Rights in Land Agreements

First Nations and non-Indigenous landowners should revisit their land use agreements to clarify the ownership and future allocation of carbon rights. As carbon markets grow, ensuring these rights are secured will be essential for current and future carbon projects.

  1. Unlocking Residual Benefits in Regenerative Agriculture

Farmers participating in carbon projects are seeing benefits from required practice changes, such as improved grassland management. These adjustments not only create a new revenue stream through carbon credits but also lead to healthier land and higher yields. As a result, farmers are improving both their financial outcomes and the long-term productivity of their operations, while contributing to carbon removal as measured through soil health and biodiversity.

Carson Sinclair, Director of Origination and Marketing at Carbon RX, shared: “We organized this summit for knowledge sharing but underestimated the value of the connections made here. No matter where you are in your carbon journey, this conference proves you don’t have to navigate it alone.”

The 4th annual Global First Nations Carbon Summit is scheduled for the fall of 2025 in Treaty 6 Territory.
