Go Nuts for Macadamias with Ahualoa Family Farms

By: Get News
Hawaii’s original macadamia nut factory is back to business

Aside from the beautiful scenery and its kind people, Hawaii is well known for its fresh food and delectable cuisine. And if there’s one food in particular that’s a must-try when visiting the islands, it’s macadamia nuts. Known for its rich buttery flavor and heart-healthy fats, macadamia nuts have been a mainstay in Hawaii since the first trees were planted on the Big Island in the late 1800s.

Just a few miles from those trees, Ahualoa Family Farms has been hard at work restoring Hawaii’s very first macadamia nut factory. This historic building was the reason Honoka’a used to be called “The Mac Nut Capital of the World.” Local farmers big and small would harvest their macadamia nuts and bring them to the mac nut factory to be purchased, processed, and turned into tasty treats.

Now, Ahualoa Family Farms is continuing that legacy by once again processing macadamia nuts in the old mac nut factory. In addition to what they harvest themselves, they too are supporting local farmers of all sizes by providing an avenue for them to sell their crops. With custom designed state of the art equipment for husking, drying, cracking, sorting and packaging, it is now the oldest and newest macadamia nut factory in Hawaii!

Ahualoa Family Farms’ 100% Hawaiian macadamia nut products have been around for many years. They make 10 different flavors of roasted macadamia nuts, macadamia nut pieces for baking, a very unique mac nut flour, mac nut oil, granola, dressings, dessert spreads, and pancake mixes.

As fourth generation farmers, agriculture is in their blood. Family owned and operated, they believe it’s the simple things in life that are most important: aloha, ‘aina, ‘ohana.

Aloha is more than just a word. It’s a way of life. It’s having a humble heart and respect for all. It’s caring for the ‘aina (land) and a deep gratitude for the delicious bounty it provides. It’s the sincere appreciation of their family, friends, team, customers, and family farmers that make up their ‘ohana (family).

Although macadamia nuts are what they are known for, their tiny coffee planting has quickly gained a following. With the Hamakua Coast’s mild climate, high rainfall, and deep volcanic soils, their 100% Hamakua coffee is one happy camper and shines in every cup.

You can visit them in person by stopping at the Nuthouse located in Honoka’a. To learn more about Ahualoa Family Farms or purchase some of their delicious products, check out their website at https://ahualoafarms.com/.
