Former Scottish Chess Champion Helps Canadians Retire

Canada - September 1, 2022

Bellwether Family Wealth Management, The Beaches Group, is a team of financial advisors with expertise in various realms, from investment to tax planning to risk management. They have welcomed Chris Jardine onto the team who brings not only his expertise and education as a family wealth advisor but also the lessons he has learned as a former Scottish chess champion, to provide the best retirement preparation skills they can.

As a child, Chris joined the after-school chess club to play with classmates, unaware at the time that many of the basic principles of chess would help him later develop the skills to help Canadians retire, over 5000kms away from his hometown. He compares chess to financial planning as both are games of strategy, that require knowing the different moves that one can make. Similarly, as a Chess Champion of Scotland, Chris notes that just with chess, there are many roads to success when strategizing for retirement.

Patience and discipline are key traits of any successful chess player. The same can be said for any successful retirement plan. Unless one wins the lottery or gets an unexpected inheritance most people aren’t coming into $1mn overnight. A patient, disciplined approach to accumulating a nest egg is crucial to helping clients get where they want to be. In chess, the player must keep their king safe above all else. With retirement planning, the client must strike the right balance of risk and reward.

Keeping a cool head during uncertain times is vitally important. A lot of retirement portfolios this year have seen losses equivalent to several pawns taken out as well as a bishop and a couple of knights. Investors can feel more exposed and uneasy but not making rash decisions, keeping a cool head, and evaluating the strategy going forward is the best course of action. Successful chess players are always thinking several moves ahead and what actions may result in the need to pivot. In both chess and life, unexpected things happen. Those who are successful adjust as needed and take the correct action.

In chess sometimes players must sacrifice a piece to gain a bigger advantage in another way. In any successful retirement plan, a sacrifice of some sort is almost always required to amass any substantial amount of wealth. It is not as daunting as it seems though. A pawn can win the game in chess if managed correctly. Saving a bit here and there year after year after year (and investing it wisely) can provide you with a comfortable retirement.

Combining his expertise in finance with the core values of strategy ingrained by chess, Chris looks forward to helping many Canadians see their way to financial success, just as he saw his way to chess success.
