Highwood, IL Charity Joey's Food Fight Expands Anti-Hunger Awareness Campaign

Chicago restauranteur and anti-hunger advocate Joey Morelli has expanded the ongoing efforts of his global charity mission, Joey's Food Fight. Morelli continues to feed the hungry people of his hometown while gearing up for his next chef residency at orphanages overseas.

Highland Park, United States - June 15, 2023

This latest phase of Morelli's campaign will include strategic partnerships with the Chicago Help Initiative and Hope House, a subsidiary of Hope for the Silent Voices overseen by Deerfield native Eric Lyons.

Morelli, the owner of a successful restaurant called Max's Deli in his hometown of Highland Park, has dedicated his life to using the culinary skills that he's mastered over a lifetime of professional cooking to feed and uplift hungry children across the globe.

"It's called 'Joey's Food Fight' because I want to fight to feed kids all over the world," says Morelli. "That's what I've always wanted to do. That's my dream."

Morelli's charity takes a unique approach to combating hunger. Rather than simply donating supplies and funds to the orphanages that he serves, Morelli actually travels to the places where his help is needed and takes up residence with an eye toward building something sustainable.

On a recent trip to Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, Morelli partnered with Hope House to revitalize an orphanage operating in one of the city's most impoverished districts. When he got there, he found a crumbling kitchen equipped with nothing but a single-burner gas stove to cook for more than fifty orphans.

Morelli went to work, using the funds he'd raised to rebuild the orphanage's kitchen into a clean and functional space with a three-compartment sink and modern appliances like a stove, oven, grill, and refrigerator.

He then stocked the new kitchen with quality ingredients from the local market and taught the kids how to cook for themselves over the course of a month, enlisting the help of the older children and showing them how to use good hygiene and sanitation practices to ensure that their meals were safe to eat.

"My videos are all about showing people the lasting effect of what I'm doing," says Morelli. "I look for opportunities to help. When I find one, I say 'yes,' I raise as much honest money as I can, and then I show my donors exactly where their money is going through my website and social media platform."

Right now, Morelli is back in Chicago, where he's spent the last eight weeks working with volunteers for the Chicago Help Initiative to feed the local homeless population and refugees from Venezuela and Ukraine. Meanwhile, he's also raising funds for a trip to Manilla in the Philippines later this year, where he will do another chef residency at a pair of orphanages near the city.

"Right now, I'm just letting the universe guide me to where I'm needed and doing my best for the people that it brings me to," Morelli says. "Wherever I go, you can bet that I'll be recording everything I do so that people can see the impact we're having and get themselves involved."
