Palm Bay, United States - June 21, 2023

The new line takes its name from the unique material used in its knife handles. According to Liong Mah Design, Micarta was invented by George Westinghouse as early as 1910. The material is made by sealing layers of paper, linen, canvas, or other fabrics with phenolic resins to create a strong, lightweight, and scratch-resistant plastic-like substance.

The resulting material is well known for its strength, heat stress resistance, texture, and unique aesthetic from the fabric used in its manufacture. Micarta is widely used for several industrial applications, including aerospace engineering and electrical insulation, and has more recently become a popular component in the handles of handguns and knives.

Liong Mah Design has added the new Micarta material to various popular knife designs, including the Tanto One, the Traveler, the Hawk, and the Zulu. The updated GSD2 micarta variant features a rich burlap stonewash finish handle for a secure grip. The 3.5-inch drop point blade is crafted from M390, known for its exceptional wear resistance, polishability, and dimensional stability.

"Micarta can withstand extremes in temperature, and doesn't become brittle with age," says a spokesman for the company. "Liong Mah Design uses canvas Micarta to create a classic look and feel for our knives while making them durable enough to meet our customers' expectations for an everyday carry."

In addition to an updated catalog of knives with the new handles, the Liong Mah Design website also offers a micarta handle guide on how to choose, handle, and care for an EDC knife, as well as a blog to keep knife enthusiasts up to date on the latest in EDC knife design.
