New Regulatory Updates to Create Thousands of Digital Accessibility Jobs

In a historic shift towards digital accessibility, recent updates to ADA Title II and Section 504 regulations now require that websites, web content, and mobile apps conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA, a technical standard for web accessibility. This requirement impacts state and local governments and healthcare providers across the United States, creating a significant demand for digital accessibility expertise.

"For organizations that can afford it, hiring an accessibility coordinator will be extremely helpful. Even those organizations with budget constraints will benefit from contracting with accessibility consultants," said Kris Rivenburgh, founder of Accessible.org.

The new rules updating Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are designed to prevent discrimination on the basis of disability. These rules apply to numerous public entities under Title II and recipients of federal financial assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under Section 504.

These recent updates reflect a strong government commitment to equal access in all services, programs, or activities.

The new requirements also open opportunities for a variety of accessibility professionals, including coordinators, technical experts, developers, and user testers.

Furthermore, knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA will become an asset for current employees, contractors, and job seekers alike.

“Even if you’re not making updates to the website or posting on social media, everyone writes emails, sends messages, and creates documents, so everyone needs to know best practices for digital accessibility,” Rivenburgh said.

Rivenburgh’s course, the WCAG Course, provides the exact training needed to understand the WCAG 2.1 AA standard.

“Once you translate the technical documentation into plain language, WCAG is actually fairly easy to learn. It’s just a list of things you need to do for accessibility,” Rivenburgh explained.
