Dalton Family Eyecare Expands Technological Scope with AdaptDx Pro

Dahlonega, GA, August 6, 2022 – Dalton Family Eyecare as incorporated the use of the AdaptDx Pro system in their practice. This innovative equipment can gauge a patient’s risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other sight-threatening diseases. The new technology is part of Dalton Family Eyecare’s continued commitment to providing exceptional eye care services for their patients.

“We’re very grateful to bring the AdaptDx Pro into our practice, because detecting AMD as early as possible is a huge benefit for our patients,” said Calvin Dalton, O.D., founder of Dalton Family Eyecare. “What’s unique about the AdaptDx Pro system is it can calculate your risk of age-related macular degeneration before any other technology on the market. When we’re talking about time-sensitive issues pertaining to the retina, early detection is everything.”

The AdaptDx Pro system tests for dark adaptation, or how well eyes adjust to changes in lighting. Impaired adaptation to the dark is an early sign of AMD, which can cause blindness. Drusen, which are fatty deposits on the retina, are typically also examined as an early indicator of AMD, but the AdaptDx Pro can detect signs of AMD through dark adaptation long before drusen are visible.

“The machine allows for us to be more thorough with our care. Detecting AMD before any signs or symptoms are visible to us is a major advancement,” said Dalton. “AMD can slip through the cracks without regular comprehensive eye exams because its signs are often not apparent. By using our experience along with the advanced technology of the AdaptDx Pro®, we are able to potentially save more of our patients’ sight.”

The AdaptDx Pro, created by MacuLogix, uses an objective functional measurement called the Rod Intercept which measures the amount of minutes it takes for eyes to adapt to darkness. Impaired dark adaptation as measured by the AdaptDx Pro is 90% specific and sensitive to AMD, detecting the disease at its earliest stages. The machine also utilizes Theia, an artificial intelligence technician that guides patients through the process.

“Patients and staff love Theia — her gentle coaching, combined with the well-designed, comfortable headset puts patients at ease and frees up technicians while testing takes place,” said MacuLogix clinical advisor Jeffry Gerson, O.D., F.A.A.O. “Ultimately, the AdaptDx Pro enables us to test more patients to find disease that we may have otherwise missed and start those patients on a treatment plan to slow the progression of their disease.”
